January 23 @ 8:00 pm - 11:55 pm

Greetings Everyone Interested in the Homeless Count,

Here are instructions on how to register for the Homeless Count this week. Note that it happens in the evening, there is training provided at the deployment site on the day-of, and you will be in a group to help ensure safety. Click on the ‘Sign Up’ button at

The best thing to do is to sign-up for the location most convenient to your home so you can connect with others in your community. If you choose to sign-up please let me know via email so I can connect you with other ICLC staff or volunteers that we know in your area. I’ll keep a list of where people are and when.

After the count we’d love to hear about your experience and share the stories with our colleagues and supporters. Please tag @homeful.losangeles on IG and Facebook on anything you capture on count night or email me video and images at

Thanks so much for even considering being of service above and beyond the amazing work you do already.

Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count
January 21, 22, & 23
What is the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count?
Every year, thousands of volunteers dedicate their time to complete the largest homeless count in the nation. Over three days, volunteers cover 85 cities and 134 unincorporated communities in LA county. The count provides a point-in-time snapshot of the number of people experiencing homelessness and their geographic locations. Volunteers choose where they would like to participate and many do so in their local community or neighborhood.
Why is it important?
Data from the count helps government agencies, foundations, and private funders in distributing resources to where it is needed the most. Trained social outreach workers also conduct in-depth demographic surveys and interviews to better understand the underlying causes of homelessness. For instance, we learned that about half of the 9,200 people new to homelessness in 2019 became homeless because of an economic hardship or other financial reason. The best way to stop homelessness is to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place. What do homeless count volunteers do?

Volunteers report to a dedicated meeting site on count night. An experienced team will train volunteers to conduct a visual count using a designated form, clip board, and writing tool. For safety and accountability, volunteers are assigned to a group to cover a specific geographic area by foot or car. The data collected on each form will be compiled in a formal report released in late spring. The report is critical for helping us serve our clients while better understanding their needs.
